Music

What makes Daedalus different?

‘I have been actively performing, teaching, and supporting individual musicians for over 40 years. As a multi-instrumentalist, with an almost limitless love of musical genre I have the ability to appreciate and work with both soloists and groups of musicians.

My professional, non-musical career has involved working globally with a lot of people. Growing teams, mentoring, and enabling success comes naturally.

I believe strongly in people and work hard to adapt my style and approach to suit each individual – both them as a person and the relationship they have with music and their intrument.

Music should be fun and I’m a great believer in having fun. The moment music feels like a chore, it loses some of the magic and that can so often reflect in someone’s performance.

Putting all that together – having fun, understanding and believing in investing in people, and having a wide experience of working with musicians of all ages and genres makes for a great combination.

My core strength lies in accompanying people. I can sight read almost anything on the piano and learn quickly – both the music and the person. I started accompanying when I was 14 – that’s 40 years ago. I never stopped, actively working with choirs, groups and soloists. I don’t just turn up and play – accompanying is about listening, reading ALL the music and responding to the musician. The aim is to make their performance as good as it can be. A good accompanist helps the soloist – accommodates them, moves with them, sometimes even dragging them along.

It’s not the only thing that I do though. I perform as well, and have a wide repertoire of music for different occasions.

I’m really comfortable playing incidental music at events such as weddings, tea parties or evening music in a bar. I’ve also been stand in keyboard player in a number of bands of all genres from 80s covers through to jazz and heavy rock.

I’ve also spent many years stepping in to play organ at funerals, weddings, and other church events.

The difference in all of this is that the music is about you and your needs – not about me. I’m truly flexible to make your experience the best.

I’m DBS checked and am happy to share both the check and to support enhanced DBS applications by any organisations. I’m also happy to supply references if required.

How much does it cost?

This is the really simply bit.

I have a standard hourly rate and a half hourly rate on application.

Reduced rates for students below grade 6.

Travel time and costs by agreement where necessary (see below).

Events and concerts are based on hourly rate and travel costs but open to negotiation and will usually be much more cost effective.

For individual accompanying, I can travel to you or you can travel to me. I have a small separate studio / office / workshop at home with recording facilities which is big enough for everything up to and including solo cello.
